LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced their first-round selection (29th overall) in the 2021 MLB Draft, taking left-handed pitcher Maddux Bruns out of UMS-Wright Prep School in Mobile, Alabama.
This season, Bruns, 19, went 7-0 with a 0.86 ERA (6 ER/49.0 IP) in 10 starts for the UMS-Wright Bulldogs, striking out 102 batters while walking just 19. Bruns allowed just 13 hits on his way to being named the Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year.
“Maddux has a premier power pitch package that we think will play at the Major League level in an impactful way,” said Dodger Vice President, Amateur Scouting Billy Gasparino. “His work ethic and ability to make adjustments are two traits we put extreme value on. We can’t wait to get Maddux in Dodger Blue and start the process of him becoming a Major League starting pitcher.”
The 6’2 Bruns, who was also named the 2021 Mr. Baseball in the state of Alabama, was scouted by Dodgers’ area scout Benny Latino and recognized as the Class 5A Pitcher and Player of the year for Alabama. He tossed two shutouts and one perfect game while also hitting .337 with three homers and a .450 on-base percentage at the plate.
The hard-throwing southpaw has committed to play baseball at Mississippi State.
